Dental Health

On your very first visit to your dentist (most of us probably don't remember this!), the hygienist or dentist counted all the teeth in your mouth ... do you know how many teeth your dog or cat has?? Most dogs have 42 teeth and cats have 30 or 32 teeth! Now, imagine how our mouths would feel if we never went to the dentist or if we never brushed our teeth ... For most of our pets this is true. By the age of 3, 70-80% of pets have already developed dental disease, also known as periodontal disease - WOW! That is a staggering number, and as such, dental disease is the MOST frequently diagnosed health problem in pets.

Dentists say only floss the teeth you want to keep, well our vets say only brush the teeth you want your pets to keep ... on-going home and professional care are needed to help keep your pets teeth healthy.

We spend a lot of time keeping our own teeth healthy and it's not just to stop bad breath, it is to prevent bacteria from entering our blood stream and damaging our heart, kidneys and other organs. This is very true for our pets as well. If you are looking to start an at home preventive care routine or in need of more professional care for your pet, please give us a call. We are happy to help.

What you can look out for to alert you to a problem with your pet:
  • Bad Breath
  • Swollen / Red Gums
  • Tartar Build Up (yellow-brown build up on the teeth)
  • Change in eating habits - Reluctant to eat
  • Excessive Drooling
  • Depressed - Not as peppy as usual
  • Loose Teeth
  • Pawing at the mouth

As a part of your pet's annual health check up, we will thoroughly examine their mouths and make recommendations based on their individual oral health. However, if you suspect a problem, it is best dealt with sooner than later, so give us a call if you are concerned.
